Behind The Wheel 2017 Genesis G80 5.0 Ultimate

The 2017 Genesis G80 keeps everything you liked about the 2016 Hyundai Genesis and removed the Hyundai name. Lets take a look and see how the rebranded Genesis holds up.

The 2017 Genesis G80 we tested featured a 420 HP 5.0 Liter V8 engine. This engine is mated to an 8 Speed Automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC and Paddle Shifters. This combination gives you an EPA estimated 15 mpg city and 23 mpg highway for a combined mpg of 18. Our testing came out to  17 mpg combined, right in line with the estimates. The G80 features Intelligent drive mode that lets you choose between Eco, Normal, Sport, and Snow modes. The power is put to the ground through 19 wheels.

The combination of power and transmission will give you a 0-60 time  5.4 seconds. Acceleration off the line will push you into your seat. Thanks to the Genesis traction control, you get all 420 hp with the ability to handle it. If you turn the traction control off, you will have the power to leave a nice set of rubber marks behind you.

One downside to the tire combination, you need to watch for pot holes, as within an hour of our test, we ended up with 2 flat tires due to a Western Pennsylvania early springtime pot hole.

Thanks to being a luxury car, the 2017 G80 is packed full of safety features. Vehicle Stability Management System and the Electronic Stability Control with Traction Control help keep you on the road no matter the road conditions. This is pared with ABS and Brake assist. If you should lose control or get into an accident, The G80 9 airbags help keep you safe.  If you happen to take your eyes off the road, the Automatic Emergency Braking along with Lane Keep Assist and Lane Departure Warning will not only keep you from running into the car in front of you, but will give you a warning when you veer out of your lane, and will automatically guide you car back into the lane you are in. When you are out traveling, you also have Smart Cruise Control that will automatically keep you at the same distance from the car in front of you, up to the set speed on the cruise control. This way, if the car in front of you slows down, the G80 will automatically slow down your car. If a car should happen to come between you and the car in front of you, this will keep you from running into that car.

The G80 Ultimate that we tested comes with a comfort and convenience package that includes Matte Finish Wood and Aluminum Trim. You get a Panoramic Sunroof with  Tilt and slide. This allows your whole family, front and rear seats, to enjoy the stars on clear night drives. The headlights are Bi-Xenon HID bulbs. You also have automatic headlights. This combination gives you very bright white light, while also automatically turning your high beams on and off if cars are coming towards you, and after you pass. This system works great with oncoming cars, but does sometimes shut the high beams off due to road lights.

The rear view mirror features a Compass, Homelink, and is Auto Dimming. This way, you are never blinded by traffic coming up behind you at night.

The interior is wrapped in premium leather with heated and ventilated front seats. The driver’s seat is power adjustable 16 ways, and the passenger seat is 12 way power adjustable. The seats fit your body comfortably and hold your body firm and in place when going around corners.

Infotainment is provided by a 9.2 inch touch screen with Navigation and HD Display. This includes AM/FM/HD Radio with SiriusXM Radio and Lexicon Audio. You get a 90 day trial of the SiriusXM. This system also allows you to have hands free phone calls. You can control the infotainment system via steering wheel controls and also the controls in the center console.

The G80 features front and rear Parking assist. This helps keep you from backing into a car or curb when parking. One thing I found great about the system is the fact that it will detect curbs to keep you from scraping the front of the bumper.

The Genesis Experience includes 3 year/36,000 mile Complimentary Scheduled Maintenance, 3 year/36,000 Mile Complimentary Valet Service, 3 Year/Unlimited Mile Complimentary Enhanced Roadside Assistance, 3 Year SirisuXM Traffic & Travel Link, 3 Year Map Care, and 3 Year Complimentary Genesis Connected Services.

The warranty that comes with the Genesis is  5 Year/50,000  New Vehicle Warranty, 10 Year/ 100,000 Mile Powertrain Warranty, and 7 Year/ Unlimited  Perforation Warranty.

The 2017 Genesis G80 5.0 Ultimate is a comfortable and fun luxury car to drive. You have all the power you need with some in reserve as well as the handling to keep the car on the road.  There is room for 5 adults to comfortably fit so you can have a business meeting and then take you co-workers out and show off you car.

The 2017 Genesis G80 5.0 will lighten your wallet to the tune of $55,670 including the wheel locks, mud guards, and freight and handling. Head over to your local Hyundai dealer and check out the G80 and the other Luxury Cars in the Genesis Line.
