D-Link Introduces First Camera Supporting H.265 Video Compression Standard

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif.Jan. 18, 2018 /PRNewswire/ — D-Link today announced the 5 Megapixel H.265 Outdoor Dome Network Camera (DCS-6517), a high definition professional surveillance and security solution ideal for small, medium and large enterprises. The DCS-6517 features an improved sensor and support for H.265 to deliver superior video quality and lower bandwidth use in all conditions. With Power over Ethernet (PoE) and a rugged, weatherproof design, this camera is extremely reliable and ideal for deployment in any surveillance application.

“D-Link is excited to push the edge of technology with the introduction of our very first H.265 compression standard camera,” said Randy Bart, product line manager, D-Link Systems. “We are always looking to offer our customers the latest enhancements in surveillance, and will continue to do so with our H.265 camera solution.”

Built for the outdoors, the DCS-6517 has an IP67 rating, meaning the camera is protected against dust and long-term water immersion. An added sunshield provides protection against environmental elements while blocking out glare and various mounting options, giving installers maximum flexibility for any location. Most importantly, support for Power over Ethernet (PoE) provides power and network connectivity via a single cable – making the DCS-6517 a truly versatile solution that can be used in a wide range of applications and environments.

The DCS-6517, designed with advanced monitoring and H.265 support, also has built-in smart IR LED illuminators with a range of up to 65 feet, allowing the camera to keep watch even in complete darkness and adjust power based on object distance to avoid washing out. To maximize bandwidth efficiency and improve image quality, the DCS-6517 provides real-time video compression using H.265 and MJPEG codec. The H.265 codec, or High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), uses the latest compression algorithms resulting in up to 50 percent storage savings while decreasing bandwidth use compared to H.264, allowing better visual quality and recording performance. These features work together to give users a reliable surveillance camera capable of monitoring areas 24/7 – no matter the environment or the application.

The DCS-6517 camera includes D-ViewCam, a complete surveillance software package that enables users to view, manage and record from up to 32 cameras on a single computer in a central location. In case of unusual activity, users can opt to receive recordings and e-mail alerts when motion detection or events are triggered by any of their devices. The DCS-6517 also has a built-in 802.3af compliant PoE module that simplifies installation by providing power and networking connectivity with a single cable, reducing the need to drill holes or lay down additional cabling.
