Verizon and Samsung reach multi-gigabit throughput over 5G NR and mmWave spectrum

NEW YORK, SEPT. 12, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – In addition to real-world 3GPP 5G New radio (NR) demonstrations on commercial networks in the field, Verizon and its network vendors continue to explore the capabilities of 5G technology and to push it to new thresholds. Today, Verizon and Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. announced the world’s first successful data transmission using 800MHz bandwidth of 28GHz frequency, resulting in a maximum throughput of close to 4Gbps. The test took place in Samsung’s Dallas, TX lab.

The transmission used Samsung’s 3GPP-based 5G New Radio (NR) technology over mmWave spectrum and National Instruments’ (NI) 5G test user equipment. This was the latest in a series of 5G NR “firsts” Verizon has achieved with 5G technology leaders in recent months and demonstrated the significant power of 5G NR technology and mmWave spectrum for maximum throughput. Tests like this lay the groundwork for next-generation 5G networks and for the 5G use cases that will benefit from massive bandwidth, super-fast speeds and ultra-low latency.

“In addition to the recent demonstrations we’ve done in the field moving mobile 5G service closer to reality, this test shows how we’re also still working in the lab to push the limits of 5G even further, setting the stage for tomorrow’s super high-speed 5G solutions,” said Bill Stone, vice president, Technology Development and Planning for Verizon.

“We have successfully tested the capabilities of mmWave in 5G NR-compliant equipment and have completed the critical steps of commercialization,” said Magnus Ojert, vice president, Networks, Samsung Electronics America. “Our early research and development on 5G, coupled with our chipset, device and network technology businesses, has enabled us to achieve industry firsts like this to support Verizon in delivering 5G services.”

5G mmWave’s massive bandwidth, super high speeds and ultra-low latency will revolutionize the ways people live, work, learn and play. This most recent test demonstrated what 5G NR technology is capable of and the throughput tomorrow’s next-generation networks could deliver.

Verizon has announced 5G Home, the world’s first commercial 5G broadband internet service, will launch in Los Angeles, Sacramento, Houston and Indianapolis on October 1. It is built on Verizon’s Ultra Wideband 5G network. Verizon is the first company to bring 5G broadband internet service to consumers and is expected to be the first to offer 5G mobile service.
