5 Used Car Care Tips Every Car Owner Should Know

Taking proper care of any vehicle is important, but an older one may require a bit more maintenance. New cars can be very expensive, so most people who own older cars certainly want their vehicles to last as long as possible. To keep your vehicle running and to extend its life, take advantage of these used car care tips.

Change the Oil
Car maintenance 101 instructs car owners to change their oil routinely, especially if they have a used car with higher mileage. Your car’s engine needs oil to keep running, so keeping up on your oil changes is crucial. Whether you take your car to the shop or do it yourself at home, you should change your oil every 3,000 miles.

Check the Air Filter
Neglecting your air filter could result in serious damage to your car. A dirty air filter can increase your fuel consumption, harm your engine, and cause more emissions. You should replace your air filter every 12,000 to 15,000 miles. Luckily, your mechanic will usually check the air filter when you take your car in for an oil change.

Check the Battery
There’s nothing worse than being stuck somewhere because your car’s battery has died, so always keep an eye on your battery’s performance. Replacing your battery every five to seven years is recommended. In the meantime, make sure that your battery’s terminals are connected properly. Also have jumper cables handy in case your battery dies if you accidentally leave your lights on or due to cold weather.

Clean Your Car
Another no-brainer when it comes to caring for your older vehicle is to wash it regularly. Failing to wash and wax your car on the regular is one of the primary causes of faded paint, rust, and many more aesthetic issues, so make sure to clean your car’s exterior at least once a month.

Check Your Tires
Your tires bear the brunt of the road, so they require as much care and attention as the rest of your vehicle. Rotate your tires every 6,000 to 8,000 miles, and make sure to check the tire pressure frequently. You can also easily improve your used car by upgrading to new tires.
