5 Tips for Driving on the Highway

There are a lot of obstacles for new drivers to overcome. One of the most intimidating can be highways, full of cars going at least 60-miles per hour. To remain calm, here are some tips for driving on the highway.

Drive in the Right Lane

One of the biggest rules of driving on the highway is being in the appropriate lane. The left lane is meant for passing, which means it’s the faster lane. Meanwhile, the right lane is typically where people maintain their speed. When you are first starting out, it’s better for you to drive in the right lane, so you can get comfortable with highway driving.

Use Your Turn Signals

With cars going at such high speeds, it’s essential for you to use your signals to communicate with others. Using your signals should be a habit developed on the roads anyways, but not doing so on the highway can be more of a dire situation. When you do need to make a turn, make sure you look around and check out blind spots before you move over.

Speed Up When Entering

Speaking of turning into a different lane, one of the scariest parts about driving on the highway is merging onto the highway. Your best bet is to look ahead, speed up, and use your turn signal. With the right preparation, you will enter the expressway with ease.

Look Ahead

The next tip for driving on the highway is to make sure that you are looking ahead. Highways are known to have plenty of accidents, which means that there could be lane closures, which causes increased traffic. Be on the lookout for this as you are driving.

Keep a Safe Distance

Our last piece of advice to those who are new to driving is to maintain a safe distance between you and the car in front of you. This means being at least three seconds of driving distance apart, but if there are bad weather conditions, then you should increase the difference to lessen the risk.
