Samsung Electronics Obtains ISO Certification for Personal Care Robot System With GEMS Hip

Samsung Electronics has become the first company to obtain the ISO 13482 (Robots and robotic devices — Safety requirements for personal care robots) certification in Korea, an international certification, which marks a significant achievement for assistive personal care robot GEMS (Gait Enhancing and Motivating System) Hip.

ISO 13482 is a globally recognized standard established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in 2014 to ensure safety in the use of mobile servant robots, physical assistant robots, and person carrier robots. The certification formally recognizes the safety and product quality of Samsung GEMS Hip in conformance with the requirements of ISO 13482.

By applying appropriate torque to both hip joints in accordance with the wearer’s motion, GEMS Hip can reduce 24% of the metabolic cost of walking, while accelerating the speed by 14%. Eventually, this support will lead to more energy-efficient and stable gait pattern.

Besides ISO 13482, Samsung has also acquired ISO 13849 (Safety of machinery – Safety-related parts of control systems) certification for GEMS Hip’s safety feature that limits the maximum torque of the system motor.

“To expand the usage of service robots, it is of utmost importance to ensure the safety of the products,” said President Jeon-il Moon of the Korea Institute for Robot Industry Advancement (KIRIA). “We believe that the efforts to meet the strict global standardization criteria, shown through this achievement, will help further develop the field of personal care robotics.”

“The acquisition of this international certification of safety is an important milestone for us,” stated Sungchul Kang, Senior Vice President and Head of Robot Center at Samsung Research. “The certification will allow us to bring robots closer to our daily lives and enhance their accessibility and utility. We will utilize this momentum to further drive our commitment in robotics research.”
