4 Tips for Men Trying Yoga for the First Time

An easy mistake to make with your fitness routine is to not have enough variety in it. While the different goals we have tend to shape our routine, you shouldn’t just be lifting weights if you are looking for something more balanced. Yoga can be a great addition because you can easily do it at home and it can help you avoid injuries, reduce stress, improve your mental health, and build muscle. Here are some tips for men trying yoga for the first time

It’s Not Going To Be Easy

The first thing you need to get out of your head when trying yoga for the first time is that it is going to be easy. A common misconception about yoga is that you are just doing stretches, but it can be just as challenging as weightlifting or cardio. Yoga can also present some obstacles because you will be doing some uncomfortable movements at times. Don’t get discouraged if you have trouble achieving some poses at first—it’s going to take some practice to get the hang of things. 

Focus on Breathing

A major aspect of yoga is breathing, which is why it’s something you should focus on as much as possible during your yoga sessions. Breathing properly during your yoga practice will get your parasympathetic nervous system going. The benefit is that you will lower your levels of cortisol, which is a hormone that holds onto belly fat. Controlling your breathing in yoga can also benefit you outside of the studio since it can help reduce stress in your daily life. 

Dress Comfortably

In addition to having a yoga mat, you also need to find yourself some comfortable clothes. Girls wear yoga pants, but what do guys wear for their session? There are a few considerations to keep in mind when you are looking for workout clothes, but the main thing is to wear something that will allow you to be flexible. 

Sit in the Back

If you are in a studio for your yoga session with others, then our last tip for men trying yoga for the first time is to sit in the back. By sitting in the back, you will be able to compare your pose to others and adjust if necessary if the instructor doesn’t help you first.
