Steps in The Metal Fabrication Process

Metal appliances are strewn all about our homes. Metal fabrication is responsible for all the convenient fixtures we have in our lives. Fabrication involves multiple steps to refine metals to their desired form. Those looking to enter the metalworking field must consider the essential steps in the metal fabrication process.

Cutting

Most processes in metalworking involve cutting metals. Sheets of metal get modified into smaller sections tailored to adhere to the desired product. There are fabrication machines every shop needs to complete steps of the process productively, especially cutting. Laser cutting machines have become increasingly utilized for intricate cuts into metal.

Shearing is one technique for cutting flat sheets of metal. Giant scissor-like machinery enables straight cuts into metal. Punching is another method to cut through metal pieces. Turret punches puncture holes into metal sheets as necessary and can punch out complicated designs.

Bending

Press brakes bend metal sheets into desired forms. Bending is one of many steps in the metal fabrication process, as metals often need to be reshaped and reworked to get the intended product. Machines employed to bend metals take time and practice. Get familiar with the dimensions and functions of press brakes before working them to promote safe operation.

Assembly

Assembly is the step during which pieces of metal get put together. Fabricators must do this step correctly and efficiently to assure proper metal assemblage. Clamps keep metal fixtures in place while welded together. Though not every project demands welding, it is a popular approach to merge several pieces of metal into one.

Finishing

Most fabrication shops will apply finishing touches to their metal products. During this step, any necessary coating and polishing will occur. These applications are in place to improve products’ longevity and prevent corrosion. They also ensure that the product appearance is as requested.

Cutting, bending, and assembly are necessary steps to the metal fabrication process before finishing. Quality metal fabricators take pride in each step of the process. Effective fabrication shops employ efficient machinery and a solid work ethic to produce high-grade products.
