Technology Used in Fire Services

Firefighting tools are constantly developing to increase the health and safety of courageous firefighters. Technology has played a significant role in improving fireman tools and equipment. Technology used in fire services enables more efficient firefighting practices that ultimately minimize fire damage and maximize public safety. Read on to discover which technological tools have become popular and effective devices to firefighters everywhere.

Firefighter Locating Devices

Being able to account for personnel while on the scene of a fire is critical. Quick firefighter location can make the difference between life or death in dire scenarios.

New technology has been implemented in fire departments’ repertoire that swiftly and effectively tracks firefighters on fire sites. Small devices locate each firefighter’s location and transmit it to a command system that can be accessed by department commanders.

Thermal Image Displays in Helmets

Firefighters have used thermal imaging for decades. More recently, thermal technology used in fire services has enhanced firefighter uniforms drastically. Manufacturers have developed helmets that include thermal imaging cameras.

Thermal imaging cameras are now incorporated into the face piece of helmets, freeing up firefighters’ hands and increasing their awareness of the space around them. With the addition of these cameras, firefighters have visibility in the thickest of smoke that enables them to make safer and more informed moves while rummaging through fire scenes.

Mobile Tech

The impact of mobile devices on the modern world is inarguable, and fire services are no exception. Firefighters use mobile devices to communicate with one another quickly.

While radio systems may still be utilized by firefighting teams, mobile devices make a reliable addition as a communicative gadget. Their network reach may be more expansive than radios allow, enabling firefighters to communicate from greater distances. App developments have furthered safety and navigation features that promote better coverage for first responders like firefighters.

Drones

Firefighting drones are a fairly new tool to be used by fire departments. Drones can analyze scenes from vantage points that preceding firefighting equipment did not allow. The assessments made by drones prevent firefighting teams from entering fatal situations.

Drones can also deliver food, water, and first aid kids. Safe drone navigation is continually being taught by fire departments to ensure safe drone piloting.
