Ways To Improve Your Semi-Truck’s Fuel Efficiency

Semi-trucks are not known for their fuel efficiency. Unfortunately, even the best trucks are not very fuel-efficient. However, there are a few steps you can take to boost your vehicle’s performance. Check out these easy ways to improve your semi truck’s fuel efficiency.

Watch Your Speed

Since your truck carries heavy loads, every mile-per-hour increase has an effect on your vehicle. When you speed up and accelerate, it requires fuel. To travel at faster speeds, you will need more and more fuel. Instead, keep a steady, constant pace and avoid speeding up too often. This will help decrease your fuel usage and save money. Additionally, it is safer for truck drivers to travel at slower speeds. It can be difficult to control large vehicles at fast speeds, so driving at a steady pace ensures the safety of the driver and others on the road.

Inspect the Tires and Engine

If your vehicle is not running properly, it can negatively impact your fuel efficiency. This is why it is essential to inspect your tires and engine before you leave for a long haul. Engine problems can cause your vehicle to work more than necessary, and this extra effort requires fuel. If you notice any broken parts within your engine, replace them as soon as possible. If you aren’t sure what type of parts to use, you can always do a little research. You can find plenty of information about Mack performance parts and others online or by asking a mechanic. A little research is all you need to find the best engine parts for your vehicle.

Notice the Weight

Heavier trucks require more fuel. Thus, the weight of your load will influence your truck’s fuel intake. One way to improve your fuel efficiency is making your truck’s load as light as you can. If there is anything in your vehicle that adds unnecessary weight, you should leave it behind if possible.

Accelerate Gently

Stepping on the pedal quickly can overwork the engine, so accelerating gently is the better option. This will not only improve your fuel efficiency, but it will also increase the life of your truck. When you stomp on the accelerator, it causes your engine to react quickly, which launches the vehicle forward. Unfortunately, this quick reaction requires a lot of fuel, so your fuel-efficiency decreases. When possible, be sure to accelerate carefully and gently.

Avoid Leaving the Engine On

Too often, truck drivers will leave the engine on while sitting at a rest stop or in a parking lot. If the engine is on, it is using fuel even if the truck is not moving. Turning the engine off when the vehicle is sitting still can save fuel and money over time. When you are not using your vehicle, remember to turn off the engine.

After learning these ways to improve your semi-truck’s fuel efficiency, you can now save fuel and improve your vehicle’s performance. During your next long haul, be sure to implement these tips and see how much you can save.
