Ziggurat Interactive, publisher and developer of retro and modern titles, today released American Hero, an action-packed FMV title, for PlayStation 4, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC (exclusively through GOG), with an Atari VCS release coming soon. The game, a sendup of 80s action films, was originally developed for the Atari Jaguar CD, but was never completed — until now! Continuing their quest to bring classic retro titles to modern platforms, Ziggurat Interactive secured the rights to American Hero, and together with developer Empty Clip Studios, have completed this lost gem. A true product of its era, American Hero is brimming with sleazy dives, brain-washed henchmen, a maniacal villain, and Golden Globe Award nominee Timothy Bottoms as the lead (who has provided new voice-over recordings).
Written in the 1990s, American Hero is a satire of over-the-top 80s action films which has itself aged into a caricature of 90’s cinema. This ‘playable movie’ features the talents of professional actors, including Timothy Bottoms (The Last Picture Show, Elephant), Daniel Roebuck (The Fugitive, Final Destination), and Musetta Vander (O Brother, Where Art Thou, Wild Wild West).
“It’s been an incredible journey to preserve, enhance and complete this unique and ambitious FMV project,” said Michael Devine, SVP of Business Development. “This has been our most challenging restoration so far and getting to release American Hero today is an example of the ethos that drives us to preserve our gaming history.”
In American Hero, players take on the role of former American intelligence officer Jack on a mission to stop the malicious virologist Krueger who plans to unleash a sinister virus upon the Los Angeles water supply. Players will face spur-of-the-moment decisions that will help or hinder Jack as he tries to find and protect the only scientist who has the cure for this deadly pathogen.
