Technologies That Help Keep Us Safe on the Roads
Though the surge in remote work due to COVID-19 may have taken quite a few cars off the road in 2020, the slow transition back to the office is bringing people back to their commutes. While we’re all getting back into the swing of driving, it’s encouraging and comforting to know that we’re safer on the roads than ever, thanks to technology. Here are some of the examples of technologies that help keep us safe on the roads.
In-Vehicle Technology and Assistance
Vehicles themselves have come a long way in terms of keeping us safe. It’s hard to believe that cars didn’t even have seatbelts at one point in time. Nowadays, we have all kinds of safety features in vehicles. Some of the popular safety features in today’s cars include:
- Automated emergency braking
- Lane departure assist
- Blindspot warnings
- Backup cameras
- Adaptive cruise control
And these are just a few in-car features. We may even start to see driverless cars and fully automated cars on the road in the future.
Cameras
Everything from security cameras to license plate recognition technology exists on roads to keep us safe. The data that these cameras capture becomes digitally categorized and stored for future reference and review if necessary. Law enforcement can review license plate numbers and where they have been every day in various situations. Without plate recognition technology and cameras, no one would be able to assess this data. We wouldn’t even be able to record it.
Public Transit Infrastructure
If you live in or around any major cities, you know how congested the interstates and highways can get, especially during rush hour. The traffic and number of drivers hurrying to get to work or elsewhere can be a hazard. This is why many cities are improving public transportation and the infrastructure that goes with it. Cities are rerouting everything from streets to highways and interstates to break up these heavy-traffic areas on the roads. Some tech even allows for real-time public transit tracking for a more efficient system.
The next time you hop in the car (or any form of transportation) for a road trip or your daily commute, think about these technologies that help keep us safe on the roads.
