Artist Turns Pittsburgh Into Robotic Playground, Teaches Humanoids to Paint
Pittsburgh famously produced Andy Warhol. The icon regularly revisited his hometown to pay homage, as the city served as a major source of inspiration for his work.
Another artist has turned the famous Pennsylvania city into her playground.
Artist Agnieszka Pilat today started a residency in Pittsburgh with Agility Robotics, where she is teaching the company’s robots how to paint and incorporating them in a San Francisco show scheduled for October. She has particularly taken a liking to DIGIT, a humanoid robot with incredible balance and movement abilities.
“This is the era of the new, intelligent machine,” says Agnieszka. “The works created by DIGIT are full of mistakes. This innocence in mark-making gives them a sense of spontaneity, like children playing with crayons.”
Agnieszka has famously created artwork with Boston Dynamics’ SPOT robot. But the robots at Agility are an entirely different breed of creatures, and offer unlimited possibilities to create art. With SPOT, a robotic arm held paint brushes and painted abstractions at Agnieszka’s command. DIGIT, on the other hand, can paint more refined and complete works.
