Why Is Design So Important to Aerospace?

Design is pivotal in many of modern society’s biggest industries, including aerospace. But, wait. Doesn’t aerospace involve airplanes—what does that have to do with design? Have you seen aircraft models? Those models couldn’t be made without designers. Before an aircraft or spaceship can set off to the sky, a team of engineers collaborates with different groups to illustrate blueprints for a new spaceship or aircraft. Now, why is design so important to aerospace?

UX Designs Influence

UX design is a field primarily found in computer science; however, it has more uses than previously perceived. You see, UX design does apply graphic design skills to create aircraft bodies while also designing solutions to potential problems.

A UX designer’s skills help bring the rough ideas of a design to life by blowing up the blueprints on screen for all to see, interpret, and reconfigure to their expectations. The UX design in engineering has shifted the thinking of the layout process in aerospace design.

Design Thinking Process

Every field has a design thinking process and follows a similar approach: inspiration, planning, and implementation. These stages all help develop projects into reality. During each operation, creators design what they imagine aircraft and spaceships to look like, which are then built and tested.

Through the testing, engineers and other builders test out and work on solutions to fix faulty parts or broken pieces.

Modeling Problems Accurately

Industries want to understand the user’s journey. When approaching the user’s journey, you explore what the client needs from you. UX designers spend time amending prolonged problems by accurately modeling their designs.

For a user to get what they need, a designer needs to offer a realistic solution to their problem, such as providing better metals to use on equipment. And then, engineers will assemble these parts and test them before sending them out to quality control for one last assessment.

Testing Out Solutions

After modeling the problems for users, engineers work in real time to test the best solutions. Some of the solutions engineers test are DLC coatings; these coatings protect all aircraft types from corrosion and inclement climates. People test with them often.

Designers work hard to create solutions for engineers to test and determine if they’re the best resolutions for users. The aerospace industry gains a lot when designs are tested before being used, which is the biggest reason that design is so essential to aerospace.
