NASA to Brief Status of Artemis I Moon Mission Today

Following Hurricane Nicole making landfall in Florida earlier this week, NASA will host a media teleconference at 3 p.m. EST today, Friday, Nov. 11, on the status of its Artemis I mega Moon rocket and spacecraft on the launch pad at the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) rocket with the Orion spacecraft aboard is seen atop the mobile launcher at Launch Pad 39B, Friday, Nov. 11, 2022, at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Teams began walkdowns and inspections at the pad to assess the status of the rocket and spacecraft after the passage of Hurricane Nicole. NASA’s Artemis I flight test is the first integrated test of the agency’s deep space exploration systems: the Orion spacecraft, SLS rocket, and supporting ground systems. Launch of the uncrewed flight test is targeted for no earlier than Nov. 16 at 1:04 a.m. EST. Photo Credit: (NASA/Joel Kowsky)

Jim Free, associate administrator for Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington, will lead the discussion.

Artemis I is the first integrated flight test of NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, an uncrewed Orion spacecraft, and the ground systems at Kennedy that will pave the way for a crewed test flight and future human lunar exploration as part of Artemis.

Audio of the media call will stream live on the agency’s website at:

https://www.nasa.gov/live

To participate by telephone, media must RSVP no later than one hour before the start of the call to Cheryl Warner at: cheryl.m.warner@nasa.gov.

Through Artemis missions, NASA will land the first woman and the first person of color on the Moon, paving the way for a long-term lunar exploration and serving as a steppingstone to send astronauts to Mars.
