Nuwa Pen – the pen that digitizes handwriting on any paper

Pen and paper lovers can’t access all their notes from one place. Nuwa is introducing a smart pen that sends a digital copy of your paper notes and doodles to your phone. As part of the Dutch delegation, Nuwa Pen makes its USA debut at CES Las Vegas. You will be able to write with Nuwa Pen at the Venetian Expo, Level 1, Hall G, Booth 62100, Stand 18.

Nuwa Pen is a smart pen that – using an integrated camera system and motion sensors – digitizes each stroke you put on any piece of paper. Yes, any piece of paper. That means sticky notes, your journals, or loose sheets of paper flying around the office. The Nuwa Pen will be available in August 2023 for $279 but can be pre-ordered today for $179. Nuwa Pen is a Dutch innovation engineered to make digital note-taking accessible for everyone.

Cameras that see ink

Nuwa Pen is a ballpoint pen with a camera system. The TRIDENT camera system – which includes three small cameras and infrared light for detecting handwriting in low light conditions – only cares about seeing ink. This means that you can write in your own style, and you will be able to see a digital copy on your smartphone.  Note-takers will not have to worry about the quality of their handwriting or doodles as long as the ink comes out of the cartridge. The camera system is the defining feature of Nuwa Pen and sets it apart from any other digital handwriting solution because you don’t need a special surface. Nuwa Pen records while you write on any paper.

Notes are stored, safe and secure

Marc Tuinier: “Handwriting represents a deeply personal form of thinking, so it was important that we design Nuwa Pen so that we only process the ink and do that processing on-device.” Nuwa Pen is packed with a processor chip using Robust SecureSPOT technology to ensure that all information is encrypted on the pen before it is sent through an encrypted Bluetooth connection with your mobile device and uploaded to our cloud services. Marc: “Our end-to-end encryption solution for digital handwriting ensures that your thoughts are safe and secure the moment you start writing.”

Works just like a pen

Just Write is a term that guides our engineering team,” Marc states. The two best features of a traditional pen are that it always works and provides unlimited freedom until the ink runs out. Nuwa Pen uses a standard D1 ink cartridge which you can pick up at any retailer, but it will also be offered through the Nuwa Pen store. The ink refill is straightforward to replace; you pull it out and push a new one in.

Packed with high-precision technology

Nuwa Pen houses multiple motion sensors, three cameras, and a pressure sensor that detects 4096 pressure levels. This combination ensures the strokes are captured in high fidelity. Nuwa Pen records as soon as you press the ink to the paper and stops when you let go of the paper. Nuwa Pen is powered by a compact power efficient chip, which digitizes the handwriting before synchronizing through Bluetooth with your phone. You get one cable, and that’s to charge the case. Nuwa Pen provides 2 hours of active writing. Place it back in the case, and 15 minutes later, you have a full battery.

Sync with the Nuwa Pen app

To access the digital notes you have made with Nuwa Pen; you need to use the Nuwa Pen app, which is connected through Bluetooth Nuwa Pen. The accompanying app will show an overview of your notes, arranged by the notebook they belong to. In the Nuwa Pen App, you can sort your notes based on location, times, and notebook. It is also possible to search through your notes with the dedicated search function. The Nuwa Pen app gives you access to all of your notes from anywhere. The Nuwa Pen app also introduces Nuwa Pen+, a €2,99 per month subscription, to convert your handwritten notes to typed text and offer augmented notes for integrations with your favorite apps.

The future of handwriting

“The dream we share for digital notes is that Nuwa Pen integrates with the ecosystem of apps you use on a daily basis,” Tuinier says. Once your handwriting and doodles are synced to the Nuwa Pen app, we are able to read out rich elements such as email addresses, phone numbers, and lists. The Nuwa Pen app enables you to tap these elements, like the phone number, and add the person to your contacts. A to-do item you write on a sticky note then syncs with your favorite to-do app. Marc: “We are also working on recognizing handwritten mathematical formulas to solve and display graphs on the Nuwa Pen app. We continue to work tightly with our users to merge their analog thoughts with the digital world”.
