AHN Launches 2023 Series of Free Monthly Cancer Screenings

Allegheny Health Network (AHN) Cancer Institute has launched its second year of monthly cancer screenings, free and open to the public, at locations throughout western Pennsylvania.

Registration is now open for the first screening, at Allegheny Valley Hospital, 1301 Carlisle St., Natrona Heights PA 15065, on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2023. Registration opens on Jan. 4, 2023, and closes on Jan. 20, and may be made by calling 412-359-6665.

“In 2022, we performed a total of 1,628 screenings and found 381 abnormalities,” said James Betler, DO, AHN radiation oncologist, system director for the Southern Region and Oncology Care Coordination, and director of AHN’s screening program. “That’s 381 cancers that were caught early, and lives potentially saved. Whether you are experiencing symptoms or not, we hope you take a few moments out of your Saturday to attend one of our monthly screening clinics. It could be a few moments that could change your life for the better.”

Screenings for the following cancers will be available: breast cancer (for ages 40+), cervical cancer (ages 21-65), colorectal cancers (age 45-75), head and neck cancers (age 18+), lung cancer (ages 50-80 with a history of smoking), prostate cancer (ages 45+) and skin cancer (ages 18+). The event is open to both AHN and non-AHN patients, and health insurance is not required.

Additional screenings are scheduled throughout the year at a variety of locations to be announced, including the newly renovated Richard J. Laube Cancer Center at Armstrong County Memorial Hospital, Hempfield Township, Erie, Grove City, AHN Allegheny General and AHN West Penn Hospital.

AHN is taking numerous steps to help patients stay safe in its facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic including around-the-clock disinfecting and screening, spaced appointments, distancing in waiting areas and use of personal protective equipment. All patients attending the Allegheny Valley event will be asked a series of questions with regard to COVID-19 on the day before the event and on arrival at either facility.
