Alternative Tabletop RPGs That You Should Check Out

Every day the tabletop RPG industry becomes more diverse, with new settings and mechanics that go beyond “d20+modifiers” rife with dragons, elves, and other stock high fantasy elements. There’s Modiphius’ 2d20 system, Free League’s Year Zero Engine, and Magnetic Press Play’s D6MV system. Each feature unique and exciting gameplay mechanics and settings, including an Eldritch-infested alternate history of World War II, ancient Nordic lands filled with wonder and danger, the dystopian future of the cult classic film Blade Runner, and a dieselpunk-themed World War I, just to name a few.

If you’re ready to expand your tabletop horizons, our clients have plenty of games that could scratch that unconventional itch. Below are just a few recent games from each publisher, and if any are of interest, let us know and we’ll get you either a physical or digital (PDF) edition ASAP.

If you’re worried that you might not have enough time to check out a full RPG, each of these games has a Quick Start option available, which offers an abbreviated ruleset, pre-made characters, and other items to make it easier to get your players to the table and start playing within minutes!

  1. Yes, lots of great stuff out there. I had a chance to play the Modiphius Conan at Gen Con this year and had a blast. Was interesting to hear from someone else at the table that the system handled Star Trek just as well as Conan.

I’m very curious about Free League’s Dragonbane (from your photo). I’ve seen that image a couple times this week and a quick Google search has my curiosity piqued. I would also like to give Vaesen a look.
