The Gruesome Finale to Acclaimed Tactical Co-Op Horror Shooter GTFO Launches During The Game Awards

10 Chambers — a Swedish game development studio composed of industry veterans known for PAYDAY: The Heist and PAYDAY 2 — has launched the final chapter of its terrifying tactical multiplayer horror game GTFO

Revealed at The Game Awards, GTFO’s free Rundown 8.0: Duality expansion is the nerve-wracking conclusion to the game’s story arc, which tasks a four-player team of prisoners to escape a hellish underground complex known as Garganta. GTFO has continually evolved since the game’s launch in 2019, with Rundown 8.0: Duality being its twelfth free major content update, adding new missions (expeditions) to the game for more than 80 total. The content-packed GTFO: Final Edition treats hardcore cooperative players with hundreds of hours of paranoia, tension, and fear to last for years to come.

“The GTFO story began at The Game Awards when the game was revealed back in 2017, so of course, we felt that it was right to also announce the final chapter at this year’s show,” said Ulf Andersson, 10 Chambers founder and creative director. “It’s important to note that while the story of GTFO comes to a close, the game will continue to be alive and kicking. Whether you’re a new player or part of the existing GTFO community, the full game with four years worth of content is available to complete from start to finish — if you and your squad are up for the challenge, that is.”

Held against their will by a mysterious entity called “The Warden,” the survival of GTFO’s cast of unfortunate prisoners depends on a team’s ability to communicate, coordinate, and manage their ammunition. As they travel deeper into the complex, searching for a way out, players will encounter increasingly horrific creatures, each posing unique challenges and requiring a different tactical approach. In GTFO, teamwork means the difference between life and a violent, visceral death. To The Warden, everyone is expendable

Players can customize their load-outs before expeditions, choosing roles best suited for the dangers ahead. They’ll additionally uncover Artifacts that can be redeemed for Boosters (or Attribute Booster Modules) that impact their skill stats (for better or worse), as well as find clues that unravel the mystery behind their captivity.

“It feels bittersweet to move on from the world of GTFO after living in it for seven years, but it was time to stretch our creative muscles and start something new,” said Simon Viklund, 10 Chambers co-founder and narrative and audio director. “A considerable amount of work was put into the narrative and level design for the conclusion of GTFO’s story arc, and we hope that our community will find it satisfying.”

With the launch of the Rundown 8.0: Duality update, developer 10 Chambers concludes a seven-year-long journey that began with former PAYDAY: The Heist and PAYDAY 2 Creative Director Ulf Andersson founding the studio following his departure from Overkill Software and Starbreeze Studios. Andersson and a team of veteran developers set out to make 10 Chambers’ first title uncompromising and original. Since the founding of 10 Chambers, the studio has grown from 10 to 100+ employees.

GTFO will continue to receive support in the form of bug fixes. Previously released Rundown content updates, which uniquely cycled in and out of the game quarterly since the game’s launch in 2019, are freely accessible and will remain available to the game’s existing fanbase and new players alike.

GTFO: Final Edition is available on Steam for Windows PC (and is Steam Deck Playable) on a 40% off sale until January 4, 2024. Prospective prisoners can play GTFO during the free weekend Steam promotion from December 7 to December 11, 2023. Rundown 8.0: Duality is available now as a free update to owners.

During The Game Awards, 10 Chambers also announced its new near-future co-op heist game, Den of Wolves, by the creator of the acclaimed PAYDAY: The Heist and PAYDAY 2, Ulf Andersson. For more information about Den of Wolves, please visit www.denofwolves.com.
