“Tombwater” Unveils An Impressive Map Of Metroidvania Progression and Zelda-Like Exploration

A dusty wind blows through the desolate town, as a wandering marksman holsters his gun and begins his descent into darkness.

Last week, publisher Midwest Games and solo dev Max Mraz unveiled the in-game map for Tombwaterthe upcoming 2D souls-like action RPG launching on PC later this year. Showcasing the sheer size of what’s to come, the map gives a full scope of nearly 20 distinct biomes that players will progress through in classic Metroidvania fashion. Brace for multiple areas available to explore at any time, others requiring abilities gained, items procured, or bosses defeated.

“We were having so much fun exploring what could be in each area that we didn’t realize how big the map was growing,” said Max Mraz, lead developer at Moth Atlas. “We got together one evening to play through the game’s main path — and, six hours later, we weren’t even halfway through! The world map here doesn’t even touch on Tombwater’s various mines, sewers, tunnels, or Lost City deep in the heart of the mountain.”

The demo, available now, explores the Spanish Fort — an experience that shares only 5% of the title’s extensive map. To further illustrate the map’s size, Mraz’s posted a direct comparison to one of its biggest inspirations: The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. At launch players can expect 20 to 25 hours of gameplay, rife with Eldritch monsters and the secrets they intend to keep buried.
