As photos, payments, and loyalty cards increasingly digitize, how will the ideal next-generation of wallets look and function? San Francisco’s WaterField Designs, an innovative leader in custom laptop sleeves, bags, and device-specific cases, announces a new crowdsourced design project to create a set of cutting-edge wallets that address this question. Through surveys, community updates, and continuous feedback from customers, WaterField will design, fine-tune, and launch several contemporary wallets in March that suit the needs of both digital professionals and classic carriers.

“We all have a favorite wallet, and we don’t think the phone will replace it any time soon,” said company owner Gary Waterfield. “However, it may be time to re-think how we use our wallets today. A wallet is a highly personal item, so we want to involve the community to help us design their new favorite wallets for the future.”

WaterField’s Next Generation Wallets Project kicks off today with a survey designed to learn what people appreciate or would like to change about their current wallets, what they carry or wish to carry in their wallet, and any innovative ideas they envision for their next favorite wallet. WaterField will pour over the data collected and provide participants with follow up questions, updates, and prototypes, as the company continually solicits participant feedback. In March, WaterField will introduce several elegant and highly functional wallets tailored specifically to customer needs.

“We were ready to design new wallets when we came across Mathew Kitchen’s Wall Street Journal article that ponders whether smartphones will ever fully replace wallets,” said Waterfield. “Many quoted in or commenting on Kitchen’s article suggest that the answer is, ‘No.’ They see their wallets as extensions of their style and as historically meaningful. We agree and aim to build on the personal connection people have with their wallets by learning from our customers what form and style their ideal next wallet will have.”

The WaterField team has always created new products inspired by customer suggestions. It formalized its unique community-sourced design process with the collaborative development a collection of Nintendo Switch cases. High customer and company satisfaction with the process inspired WaterField to engage customers again in the development of the Air Porter Carry-on for frequent travelers, the iPhone Camera Bag for iPhonographers, the Pro Executive Backpack for professionals, and a series of Gear Cases for organizing tech items. Working with customers throughout the design lifespan results in more innovative products that explicitly meet customers’ needs.
