Free League Publishing Brings H.P. Lovecraft’s The Shadow over Innsmouth To Life In François Baranger’s Illustrated Edition

Earlier this week, Free League Publishing announced a fully illustrated edition of H.P. Lovecraft’s classic horror story The Shadow over Innsmouth. Illustrated by the renowned artist François Baranger, the premium hardback volume is now available for pre-order via the Free League webstore, with a release date to be announced at a later time.

Drawn by a fascination with New England’s haunted past, a young traveler accepts a detour through the isolated coastal settlement of Innsmouth — a town feared by its neighbors and marked by quiet decay. Strange gold jewelry, whispered rumors, and the weight of unseen eyes pull him deeper into its crumbling streets, where long-buried secrets linger beneath the tide.

Considered one of Lovecraft’s most influential works, The Shadow over Innsmouth has inspired generations of artists and storytellers. In this new illustrated edition, François Baranger brings the once-prosperous fishing town to life through sweeping, atmospheric artwork that captures both its faded grandeur and unsettling mystery.

Known for his illustrated editions of The Call of CthulhuAt the Mountains of Madness, and The Dunwich Horror, Baranger returns to bring Innsmouth to life through sweeping full-spread imagery that captures the story’s unsettling atmosphere. Presented in a 262 X 350mm folio format across 72 pages, the large-size hardback edition invites both longtime readers and newcomers to experience Lovecraft’s tale in a new visual form.

Pre-orders for The Shadow over Innsmouth are now available through the Free League Publishing webstore ahead of its release later this year.

About The Shadow over Innsmouth

Fascinated by New England’s haunted past, a young man journeys through its ancient towns on his way to Arkham. Offered a detour through Innsmouth, an isolated coastal settlement dreaded by its neighbors, he becomes intrigued after seeing strange gold jewelry from the town — its design both exquisite and disturbing. Drawn by curiosity, he decides to visit.

Once a prosperous fishing port and thriving industrial center, Innsmouth is now a shadow of its former self, its wharves rotting, its streets silent, and its people marked by unsettling deformities. Despite his growing unease, the traveler feels compelled to uncover the truth behind its decay. An old drunkard, Zadok Allen, reveals the town’s grim history: in the 1800s, Captain Obed Marsh founded the Esoteric Order of Dagon after striking a pact with sea-dwelling beings who promised prosperity in exchange for unholy offerings.

When his bus breaks down, the traveler is forced to spend the night in Innsmouth. As darkness falls, he wanders the narrow, crumbling streets, sensing unseen eyes upon him as the sea whispers through the alleys.

With The Shadow over Innsmouth, Lovecraft fashioned one of the great masterpieces of early twentieth-century horror, a cornerstone of his “cosmic regionalism” whose influence has echoed through generations of writers and artists.
