Use Temperature To Fall Asleep: Embr Labs Launches Specialized Sleep Waveform For Best-Selling Wearable

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – FEBRUARY 26, 2019 – Embr Labs, the first company to make temperature personal, today announced the launch of a specialized waveform that uses temperature to help users fall asleep.

Embr Labs’ flagship product, Embr Wave, is a intelligent bracelet that allows users to control how hot or cold they feel. The revolutionary device uses precisely-engineered algorithms to deliver temperature sensations in waves, triggering the mind and body’s natural response to temperature to improve the user’s comfort by 5°F in minutes.

Designed from real user feedback, the Wave’s new Fall Asleep Mode uses temperature waves to help users fall asleep faster. Cooling or warming waves are delivered in a slow and soothing rhythm, providing a sensory anchor to calm the mind and body while falling asleep. Johnson & Johnson Innovation is currently utilizing Fall Asleep Mode to study the effect of temperature on wellness. 

“We learned from our 10,000 mobile app users that over 10% of all Embr Wave cooling and warming sessions were occuring in the middle of the night, which led us to develop a mode specifically designed for going to sleep” said David Cohen-Tanugi, Ph.D., Chief Data Officer at Embr Labs. “Since shipping, Fall Asleep Mode has been our most rapidly adopted waveform to date, with over 90,000 minutes logged in the first week.”

The release of Fall Asleep Mode includes improved user interactions that support using Embr Wave at night. When active, the Light Bar control dims to facilitate sleep. Additionally, if a user wakes up in the middle of the night, they can replay their latest sleep session with a single click of the device.

“Your sleep cycle and circadian rhythm are largely affected by your overall body temperature. Studies have shown that changing your skin temperature by even a small amount can result in significant changes in sleep quality, and we have the unique ability to give people precise, personalized changes to skin temperature that affect your overall state,” said Kristen Warren, M.S., Embr Labs’ Biomedical Algorithm Engineer. “This combined with the slower, gentler waves of temperature can be a powerful tool for falling asleep.”

Embr Wave’s core technology is based on a breakthrough physiological insight. It turns out that warming or cooling specific parts of your body can make you feel more comfortable without changing your core body temperature. The device has no moving parts, is completely silent, and can be specifically controlled based on the needs of who is wearing it.
