Uncommon Professions to Consider

Office employee, restaurant worker, medical practitioner—these are the kinds of jobs that most people think of as they study or look for a new occupation. There are so many more jobs out there than we might immediately think of, however. If you’re uncertain about your career path or are thinking of switching from your current one, read about these uncommon professions to consider.

Food Scientist

Science may be full of cold data and explanatory principles, but putting this knowledge into becoming a food scientist is anything but bland. Food scientists are the people who study food to better the processing it goes through and improve our understanding of nutrition. They seek to make the food we consume taste good and ensure that it is safe. As a food scientist, you might work to concoct flavors for various edibles, help with product development, or oversee quality assurance. Many of these people work for the government or in research institutions like universities, as well as food companies.

Video Game Tester

If you regularly play video games, you’ve probably encountered a moment where a game does not work like it is supposed to. Developers always want to minimize these in their products to make the user experience as enjoyable as possible. It’s not an easy process, though, and this is where video game testers come in. Video game testers play through video games and take notes on any glitches or bugs they come across. If you become one, you’ll also need to think a bit outside the box to find problems that might not be immediately apparent. Perhaps a player might interact with the game in an unforeseen way and meet bugs that way. You’ll be there to catch these before the game’s release.

Helicopter Pilot

If you dreamed of flying and have a sense of adventure, working as a helicopter pilot may be the uncommon profession you should consider. Unlike an airplane pilot, you’ll be able to maneuver with more complexity in all directions while in the air. This maneuverability enables helicopter pilots to take on tasks that no one else can, such as rescuing people trapped in remote locations amidst rough terrain. You could also be a pilot who gives tours to people in beautiful regions around the world or provides transportation for people who work on offshore oil rigs. Helicopter pilots are unique in that their skills are transferable to a wide range of different career paths.
