A cold saw is an integral part of your machining operation; it lets you cut metal without generating heat, which is a huge advantage. If you are currently using one or considering if you need a cold saw, you need to know how to maintain it properly. That way, you can ensure that your saw has a long life without any issues or concerns. That will end up saving you a lot of money in the long run. Bearing that in mind, here are some important tips to consider when maintaining your cold saw.

Don’t Overuse Your Blades

The first and most important tip is to not overuse a worn-out blade. Too often, users will try to squeeze out a few extra cuts from a dull blade before changing it. You may think that you’re saving money by getting the most bang for your buck out of the blade, but the opposite is true. Every time you use a dull or worn-out blade, you’re putting a lot of strain on your saw. This could lead to lots of issues, including component failures.

Always make sure to change the blade whenever it gets the least bit dull. You should also research what type of blade to use for each material, as they can vary.

Keep It Lubricated

Like any other machine, your cold saw needs adequate lubrication to operate. Always make sure that you’ve got plenty of quality gearbox oil on hand at all times. You should periodically change the oil to ensure a strong performance.

Clean It Up

Cold saws use chips and coolant to stop the blade from generating heat. These chips make quite a mess, and you need to clean them up each time. If you don’t, they will rust and attach themselves to the saw. As a result, your saw can become fused shut due to the build-up of chips inside of it. It may seem tedious at first, but these consequences make it important to clean your saw after every use.

Check the Wiring

Do you notice any cords or wires that are frayed or cut open? If so, you need to shut down your saw and replace them immediately. Coolant and chips are both electrocution hazards when paired with bad wiring. To stay safe, regularly inspect all your wires and cords. If you operate your saw with faulty wiring, you could short out your saw or potentially injure yourself.

These have been some important tips to consider when maintaining your cold saw. As long as you follow these crucial steps, your cold saw will stay in excellent working condition for years to come.
