How To Safely Store Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Warehouse

Many businesses rely upon lithium-ion batteries for their daily operations. Lithium-ion batteries are necessary for driving a forklift, operating heavy machinery, or creating better energy solutions for a business.

If you want to protect your bottom line, you must store these batteries properly for cost and safety reasons. With that in mind, here’s your guide on how to safely store lithium-ion batteries in your warehouse.

Don’t Let the Terminals Touch Each Other

Make sure that the terminals of each lithium-ion battery never make contact with each other. This is the most vital tip for storing them properly. You must keep the batteries and any associated devices in a stable place like a locker, shelf, or storage unit so that they don’t move around.

When you’re operating heavy machinery, the friction that it causes might displace your battery or cause it to fall off a shelf. For extra protection, use terminal covers so that you can ensure that the terminals never touch anything else.

Separate Them by Type and Age

Separating your batteries by their type and age will not only keep your workspace organized but will also keep you safe. When you fill a box with a random assortment of batteries, you can mix a weak battery with a strong one when it comes time to start working. This can cause a chemical reaction where a mix-up between voltages makes the batteries heat up drastically.

You don’t want your old batteries to overheat or start leaking, so separate them by age and type to prevent this. Also, separating your batteries by type will prevent the terminals from touching if you pack them together tightly. One of the reasons why lithium-ion batteries make your forklift safer is that they’re less prone to these types of reactions than lead batteries.

Store Them in a Dry Area With a Moderate Temperature

If you want to preserve your batteries and extend their shelf life, you need to store them in the proper environment. You should keep them tucked away in a dry area with a mild but steady temperature so that they don’t degrade.

Ideally, you would also keep them away from sunlight, humidity, and heat. Proper ventilation will help you avoid the latter two, and then all you must do is store the batteries indoors to keep them away from sunlight.

Overall, storing your batteries requires some caution. But you shouldn’t have any problems if you follow the proper steps. Now that you know how to safely store lithium-ion batteries in your warehouse, you can increase your productivity while you work.
