Signs That Your Electric Motor Is Going Bad

Electric motors, especially industrial ones, put up with a lot of heavy work to provide you with the energy you need. However, this quickly wears them down until they eventually break and can’t work. Preventing these breaks should be a focus of the care that goes into these motors. Luckily, if you learn the signs that your electric motor is going bad and repair them, you can avoid a lot of bigger breakdowns. Here are the more common causes and signs of electric motor breakdown.

Power

One of the more serious signs that your electric motor is going bad is if you start having power issues. There can be numerous causes for this, such as faulty wires or damage to the gearbox. A great way to keep an eye on this is with a power gauge that you can read and check regularly.

Heat

Electric motors produce power with a lot of friction and movement, creating a lot of heat at the same time. However, motors have ways they vent and regulate their heat levels as long as nothing is going too wrong. That’s why you should worry if you find your motor is overheating, as it’s likely because something isn’t functioning correctly.

Sounds

Electric motors have a lot of parts in them that can break down or cause problems, but one of the more common ones is the bearings. Bearings carry much of the weight and friction in the motor, so they wear down fast. When they do wear down, you’ll likely hear a lot of rumbling and other noises. So, if you one day notice that your motor is making odd noises, it’s time for some repairs.

Vibrations

Electric motors do shake a tiny bit as they work, but it’s not a noticeable amount most of the time. If they do start vibrating around, it’s likely because something is breaking down inside the motor, and it needs some quick repairs.

Now, there are some other signs that indicate issues with electric motors, like lower performance, but these are the most common issues you’ll come across. If you’re running inspections for issues, you should learn more about the common temperamental parts in motors. That way, you can focus your efforts when checking for these signs.
