Ideas To Improve Your Warehouse Security

Warehouses are commonly broken into, vandalized, and even robbed. As a warehouse manager, it’s frustrating trying to reconfigure your security strategy, especially if it’s a system for all workers and guests entering and leaving the building. Don’t fret; we have a master list of the best ideas to improve your warehouse security.

Emplace an Improved Employee Screening

When you’re securing a warehouse, it’s vital to have every employee screened before hiring them for the floor, security, or any other position in your warehouse. A screening test will easily divide all applicants from high-risk down to low-risk. However, this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do a deeper background check on most low-risk applicants, especially if some groups seem too good to be true.

Many applicants lie on their applications, resumes, and even during interviews. Verify the applicants’ education, employment history, and references. Give them a criminal background check. Doing all of this gives you a better idea of each individual’s factual background before moving forward.

Limit Access To Anyone That’s Not an Employee

When you’ve hired your employees, adopt a management access system that limits the amount of unauthorized foot traffic on the warehouse floors. This system can help administer better techniques to prevent vandalism and theft.

Once your employees get registered into the system, ensure that they have options to gain access, such as a fingerprint-and-access keycard or a specialized individual code. Think of how Google creates technical passwords for their customer’s and employees’ email accounts—they use special characters in conjunction with letters and numbers.

Lock Away Valuables

Right before the last group of workers clock out for the day, ensure you or a team lead locks everything up securely. A management system can include a trusted team lead who can record all shipments onto a spreadsheet and count how many loads there are before locking up for the day. Also, get security cameras installed to help keep loads under close surveillance; that way, when all employees have left, additional security gets used to monitor all loading and shipment areas.

Train All Employees

Another one of our marvelous ideas to improve warehouse security is to train your employees to be safe. Prepare by finding weak spots and errors created by employees. Then, set up a team meeting and address the problems with the team leads. They can ensure all the new and old workers maintain a safer environment in the warehouse.

It’s easy to feel reluctant when you train employees for the improvement of your warehouse. When updating your security process, ensure workers understand safety and security protocols. Confirm every step of the security process is crafted carefully and understandable for the employees to follow.
