Review: Haikubox

The older I get the more hobbies I find that I never expected to enjoy. Woodworking, piloting, podcasting, and now birding. Haikubox is the easiest way for someone with zero skill and tools to begin birding in their own back yard! This handy little box has introduced me to more birds than just a Robin or a Finch. Nature is an incredibly beautiful place and the beauty in our own backyard is no different.
Design
This device is exceptionally simple but has some really cool features behind it. The box is a hard solid plastic with a small “earhole” used to listen in on the birds songs in the neighborhood. The microphone inside is highly powerful and able to pick up sounds from eagles soaring through the skies above.

The box is also highly weather resistant to allow it to remain outdoors in the rain, sun, sleet and snow. The cord that powers this box has quite a length to it as well to allow you to plug in and hang the Haikubox basically where ever you want to. Ours in currently on the deck next to our bird feeder. Previously we would just look out and watch the birds with no real idea what they were.
App Functionality
The app is the real meat and potatoes of this. The app is so intuitive and fun. When the Haikubox detects a bird call it will trigger a notification in the app to alert you if you set that up. Once you open the app you see the most recent birds you’ve heard. The bird call is able to be listened to with a regular sound or you can access an enhanced copy that filters out background noise and focuses in on the bird call.

The app will also show you a picture of the bird that its identified and gives you the option to confirm or deny that the bird matches the call if you are a true birder. I unfortunately am not in that level. This is really cool though because some of these birds have interesting names and images that I didn’t expect or even know.
At the top of the app it shows you how many bird calls that have been detected and even the most common bird thats been hanging around. You can also sort the app by length of time, you can set the sensitivity for the calls if you aren’t getting enough or getting too many. The app is very easy to manage and work and provides a lot of insight into your space.

Lastly, you can check out other peoples boxes too! You can look in your own area or around the world to see who else has a Haikubox. My box is named Birdie Smalls and anyone can see our birds in the Toledo, Ohio area.
Overall
The everyday person doesn’t know the amount of bird species that are flying around in our own yard. The Haikubox is a very simple device that brings joy and knowledge to everyone. The app is super easy to operate and look at. You get to hear so many different sounds from different birds. The pictures are very detailed and show a you new views of birds you didn’t see before. The company does update the photos from time to time as well and they will use user photos that are submitted. This is a great relaxation tool and so fun for everyone.
