Why We Should See a Wonder Woman Game in the Near Future

All the signs point to a scenario where the world’s most powerful female superhero is spearheading her own video game. The current entertainment industry, and socio-political conditions are making it a high probability for Diana of Themyscira to become the next big video game icon. Here’s why:

1. The success of the Wonder Woman movie: There have been a few female superhero movies in the past, but none have been as successful as Wonder Woman. The Mary Sue asked Marvel Studios Chief Kevin Feige about whether female-led superhero flicks are box office poison. Feige simply replied, “Thanks to Wonder Woman… it blows that fallacy out the window.” Marvel appears to be riding along with this paradigm shift by having their own answer to Wonder WomanCaptain Marvel (starring Brie Larson), which is slated for release next year.

2. Time’s Up movement: The film was directed by Patty Jenkins, making it one of the rare successful movies helmed by a woman. The Time’s Up movement can influence better representation and equal pay in Hollywood. Wonder Woman makes a strong case for the movement to help put more women be in front and behind the camera. With all these beliefs being debunked in Hollywood, other industries are also following suit.

3. The game industry is also breaking barriers: The Huffington Post notes that the industry is also making headway when it comes to games where the main character is an independent and strong woman, such as Tomb Raider. Because Wonder Woman has proven herself to be appealing to the mass audience, the character’s in a perfect position to headline her own game. Many game makers are already experiencing the impact of her appeal, especially in titles with similar attributes when it comes to the characters. The Amazon Queen game on Foxy Games portrays a character with traits like Diana in the sense that she’s someone whose feminine nature is her strength. Such games prove that there’s a huge demand for all things Wonder Woman on the market right now so it’s really a question of when her game comes out.

4. Wonder Woman is already a star in some video games: Albeit not the main character, Green Man Gaming chronicles that in the last 20 years, Diana has appeared in games such as Justice League: Task Force, Justice League: Injustice For All, Justice League Chronicles, Justice League Heroes, and the Lego Batman games. But she really has made her presence felt in Injustice and Injustice 2 as one of the best playable characters to use. The attention to her look and powers is astonishing, it’s almost like the developers are trying to foster demand for her solo game.

5. Wonder Woman 2 will come out next year: Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Spider-Man, Captain America, Thor, and Hulk all got games based on their movies. Even Deadpool, who was featured in a previous Cerebral Overload post, got his own game even before his movies were released! While some of these games were not as exciting as their movie counterparts, it was all part of studio’s strategy to make the movies feel like must-see events. A Wonder Woman video game either before or during the sequel’s release date would be a great way to get fans hyped to watch Diana’s new adventures.
