As drivers prepare for spring road trips and warmer weather, Nexen Tire America, Inc. is reminding them not to overlook one of the most critical components of vehicle safety: their tires. After months of harsh winter conditions, fluctuating temperatures, and road hazards like potholes, spring is the ideal time for a full tire check to ensure safety, maximize performance, and improve fuel efficiency.
“Many drivers focus on oil changes and car washes as part of their spring maintenance routine, but tire care is just as important,” said David Siebert, Motorsport and Marketing Manager at Nexen Tire. “Cold weather can reduce tire pressure, winter roads can cause unseen damage, and spring rains demand optimal tread depth for traction. A simple tire inspection now can prevent big problems later.”
Spring Tire Care Tips from Nexen Tire
Check Tire Pressure Regularly
Winter’s cold temperatures can cause tire pressure to drop, and fluctuating spring weather means it won’t necessarily return to the correct level. Underinflated tires wear faster, reduce fuel efficiency, and can lead to handling and braking issues. Use a tire pressure gauge to check all four tires and adjust to the manufacturer’s recommended PSI, which can be found in the owner’s manual or inside the driver’s door jamb.
Inspect Tread Depth for Safety
Spring showers can create slick roads, and worn-out tires mean less traction. To check your tread depth, use the penny test: Insert a penny into the tread with Lincoln’s head facing down. If you can see the top of his head, it’s time for new tires.
Look for Visible Damage
Winter roads can be tough on tires. Inspect for cracks, bulges, or uneven wear that could indicate alignment issues or potential tire failure. If you notice any signs of damage, visit a tire professional for an inspection.
Rotate & Balance Tires
To ensure even wear and extend tire life, rotate your tires every 5,000 to 8,000 miles. If you notice vibrations while driving, unbalanced tires could be the cause. A professional technician can balance and align them for a smoother, safer ride.
Swap Out Winter Tires
If you switched to winter tires for the colder months, now is the time to swap them out for all-season or summer tires. Winter tires wear faster in warm conditions and can reduce fuel efficiency.
