National Teen Driver Safety Week runs from October 19–25, and AAA East Central is encouraging parents to use this opportunity to have life-saving conversations with their teen drivers about the importance of staying safe behind the wheel.
According to AAA research, more than 60% of teens get their driver’s license before turning 18. While getting a license is a major milestone, it also comes with serious risks. New teen drivers (ages 16–17) are three times more likely than adults to be involved in a deadly crash, according to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.
“Motor vehicle crashes continue to be one of the leading causes of death for teens and the risk is especially high during a teen’s first year of independent driving,” said Terri Rae Anthony, safety advisor, AAA East Central. “It’s crucial that parents talk to their teens about driving safety and make sure they are modeling good behavior behind the wheel.”
From 2019 to 2023, 13,135 people were killed in crashes involving teen drivers across the United States. In 2023 alone, there were 2,897 deaths linked to crashes involving a teen driver — a significant increase from 2,514 deaths in 2022.
Teen drivers are particularly vulnerable due to inexperience and risky behavior. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety Culture Index reveals that 72% of teen drivers (ages 16–18) admitted to engaging in at least one risky behavior while driving. These include:
- Driving 10 mph over the limit on residential streets (47%)
- Speeding 15 mph over the limit on freeways (40%)
- Texting while driving (35%)
- Running red lights (32%)
- Aggressive driving (31%)
- Driving Drowsy (25%)
- Driving without a seatbelt (17%)
To help reduce risk, AAA recommends that parents consider professional, one-on-one driver training for their teens. Instructors not only provide structured learning but also help alleviate some of the stress parents may feel when teaching their children to drive.
AAA also encourages new drivers to follow the R.E.A.D. the Road approach to improve safety behind the wheel:
- R = Right speed, for right now: Always obey the speed limit and slow down in poor weather conditions.
- E = Eyes up, brain on: Scan the road ahead, stay alert, and avoid distractions.
- A = Anticipate their next move: Watch other drivers and be ready to react.
- D = DONUT of space: Maintain a safe buffer of space around your vehicle on all sides.
