The PASS Method: How To Use a Fire Extinguisher Properly

Fire safety isn’t something most of us think about until we face a crisis. You might have a fire extinguisher under your sink or trunk, but owning one is only half the battle. Knowing how to use a fire extinguisher can mean the difference between a minor kitchen mishap and a devastating loss.
When adrenaline kicks in, you need a simple, reliable way to remember what to do. That’s where the PASS method comes in. This acronym breaks down the operation of a standard fire extinguisher into four easy steps. Mastering these steps ensures you can act quickly and effectively when seconds count.
Pull the Pin
The first step is often the most overlooked in the heat of the moment. Every fire extinguisher has a safety pin near the handle that prevents accidental discharge. You must pull this pin to unlock the operating lever.
Grab the extinguisher and hold it upright. Look for the metal ring or pin at the top of the handle mechanism. Pull the pin out firmly with a firm yank. This action breaks the tamper seal and readies the device for action.
Aim at the Base
Most people instinctively aim at the top of the flames, but that is a mistake. To stop a fire, you must attack the fuel source, not the flames themselves. Aim the nozzle or hose low, pointing directly at the fire’s base.
Stand about six to eight feet away from the fire for safety. If you get too close, you risk injury; if you get too far, the agent might not reach the target. Focus your aim on the material that is actually burning.
Squeeze the Lever
Once you have pulled the pin and aimed at the base, release the extinguisher. Grip the handle and squeeze the lever slowly and evenly. This action opens the valve and sends the pressurized agent out through the nozzle.
Maintain a firm grip as the agent discharges. If you release the handle, the flow will stop immediately. Controlled, steady pressure ensures a continuous stream of firefighting power.
Sweep Side to Side
Do not focus the spray on a single spot. To fully extinguish the fire, it is crucial to cover the entire fuel source. Aim the nozzle and sweep it back and forth across the base of the fire.
Maintain this sweeping motion until the fire seems completely extinguished. Keep a close watch on the area for any signs of reignition. If the fire flares again, promptly repeat the Aim, Squeeze, and Sweep steps to regain control.
Why Preparation Matters
Understanding how to use a fire extinguisher gives you the confidence to handle emergencies. However, safety always comes first. If a fire grows too large or you feel unsafe, evacuate the area immediately and call emergency services.
