DroneTanks Takes Tanks to the Skies – First Demo Version at Gamescom 2026

Belgian indie developer Ludum Elite announced today its debut project, DroneTanks, for PC. The roguelite throws out the classic tank game formula: instead of sluggish treads and rigid cannons, players control a flying, superpowered tank that knocks enemies out of the sky with devastating uppercuts and crushing hammer slams. At Gamescom 2026 in Cologne, Ludum Elite will present a playable build to an international audience for the first time.

Teaser Trailer:

Tank Combat With Superpowers and Unexpected Twists

DroneTanks breaks with the image of the lumbering tank. The game’s steel-plated hero flies, punches, and stomps its way through waves of enemies with ease. Its moveset feels less like classic military vehicles and more like a superhero in a suit of armor. Ludum Elite pairs that raw power with relentless pace: battles are fast, loud, and action-packed, without sacrificing tactical depth.

At the heart of DroneTanks is a deep progression system. Players mix and match abilities freely and unlock branching skill trees, crafting a completely different, often absurdly overpowered tank build with every run. No two playthroughs are ever the same.

When the Music Calls the Shots

At the core of the combat system is a direct link between the game’s audio engine and its boss fights. In encounters like the “Disco Boss,” the soundtrack itself dictates the enemy’s movement patterns and attacks. Players must dodge and counter in time with the music to survive.

Low-Poly Charm With Personality

Visually, DroneTanks embraces a stylized, cartoonish low-poly look brought to life through expressive animation, giving its “hero tank” a personality all its own. Narratively, players step into the role of a mechanical hero on a rescue mission, freeing adorable “Gemlings” from the very security robots that were originally built to protect them.

Playable Demo at Gamescom 2026

Visitors to gamescom 2026 in Cologne can try DroneTanks for themselves at the “Home of Indies” booth in Hall 10.2.

The Gamescom demo includes:

  • Campaign tutorial: Players start out in an abandoned factory bunker, learning the core mechanics step by step.
  • Unique biomes: The version features three distinct environments, offering a first glimpse of the world’s visual variety.
  • Real-time buildcrafting: Players sample select branches of the skill tree, buy upgrades in the shop, and outfit their tank with modules dropped by defeated enemies.
  • Rhythm-driven final boss: The demo culminates in a boss fight where players must dodge in time with the soundtrack to free a captured Gemling from the boss’s jaws.

DroneTanks will launch first as a content rich single-player roguelite built for high replayability. Long-term, Ludum Elite plans to expand DroneTanks with a chaotic multiplayer mode.

More information on DroneTanks is available on the official channels on XBlueskyInstagramFacebookYouTube, and Discord.
