Back-to-school tips
The Back-To-School season always seems to sneak up on us. One minute you’re enjoying your carpool-free mornings, and the next you’re shopping for a new backpack and negotiating with your child about how many personality-packed school supplies they need. Amid the excitement that comes with a new school year, anxiety and stress can also creep in – not just for the kids, but for parents too.
Over the years, I’ve embraced this moment as an opportunity to kick-off new routines, set healthy habits, and most importantly stay connected with my two boys. Here are some tips and tricks I’ve learned along the way:
Get back into a routine
To ease the transition, my family gets back into a “school night” schedule a few weeks in advance. We gradually make bedtime earlier and focus on reducing screen time. During the summer, it’s easy to let their tablet use increase, but it’s important to get it back in check ahead of school.
New Year, New Tech
Back to school is the perfect time to assess if your kids are ready for certain technologies. But don’t worry, this isn’t another thing to add to your to-do list, AT&T has a tool to help. The AT&T ScreenReady questionnaire, developed with the American Academy of Pediatrics, can help guide you in that decision. We’ve also curated a back-to-school gift guide for students of all ages. Whether your child is ready for their first watch, tablet, or phone, we’ve got deals for every budget! If your family is ready for new devices, I recommend using the AT&T Secure Family app for parental controls.
Prepare for first day jitters
To make the first school day as easy as possible, we meet the teacher and principal in advance. As a family, we walk through the new schedule, from drop-off to our nightly family time, so our kids know exactly what to expect. Bonus tip: mornings are always a rush, so we dedicate a kitchen drawer to socks, deodorant, and a hairbrush to make them smoother!
Stay connected without distraction
As a mom, I worry most about my kids while they are at school since communicating with them looks and feels different. It’s important for me to have a direct line of communication with them so I know they are safe. It turns out I’m not alone, since 74% of parents communicate with their child during school hours4 too. Also, some kids may not be ready for a cellphone but still need to connect with their parents. Similarly, some schools are starting to ban cell phone use, making it challenging for parents to stay in touch.
Ultimately, the best advice I can give for back-to-school is to have open communication as a family, plan together and be there for one another. Oh, and don’t knock the kitchen drawer until you try it.
