AT&T: The Road to Wi-Fi 7

At AT&T, we pride ourselves on being the backbone of modern connectivity, providing cutting-edge solutions through our vast fiber and wireless networks. We operate entire networks made up of more than 1.4 million miles of fiber and licensed wireless spectrum that all work symbiotically to transmit 737 petabytes of data daily.1 In our connected world, we take it for granted that we can get online anywhere – but none of this happens without the underlying broadband network that carries traffic across the globe and back in a split-second.

And when you’re at home, you probably use Wi-Fi as interface to connect to our fiber network. It’s become a household name (literally), but it’s been a journey to get to today – I know because I started my career here just as Wi-Fi was making its way into homes. Our network has evolved over the years – and we’re committed to continuing its evolution because we think our customers deserve our best connectivity.  That’s why we’re excited to be among the first to bring Wi-Fi 7 to customers, with plans to introduce a new Wi-Fi 7-capable gateway before the end of the year. We believe Wi-Fi 7 will help customers access the multi-gig internet speeds made possible by fiber and the next-generation applications and technologies that will be built upon them.

It’s all part of our purpose to help customers get connected wherever they are, thanks to a fiber and mobile network that can support American’s growing demand for connectivity at home or on the go.

My team at AT&T isn’t just preparing for this future—we’re shaping it, and we look forward to having our customers be some of the first to harness the benefits that come with constant innovation and connectivity solutions like Wi-Fi 7 and more to come.

Take a look at how our network has evolved to connect our customers below.

Pre-1999 | Prior to Wi-Fi's arrival, home internet access was typically through a wall-tethered computer that was shared by the entire household.
1999-2003 | Wi-Fi comes along – bringing in the adoption of new devices like laptops – and the advent of multiple devices in the home.
2003-2009 | Social media and streaming services hit the world, upping data needs for mobile and fixed networks.
2009-2013 | Cloud adoption brings more instant digital access at any time and from any device.
2013-2019 | Smart gadgets become integral in the at-home experience, with Wi-Fi extenders and mesh networks there to support new technology like voice assistants, security cameras, and connected appliances.
2019-Present | We bring multi-gig speeds to homes right as remote work, online learning, telehealth and more become the norm.
Present-2030 | Even faster multi-gig speeds will be able to power the next big thing – whether that be even smarter homes, Gen AI or whatever our customers need.

I am the owner of Cerebral-overload.com and the Verizon Wireless Reviewer for Techburgh.com. My love of gadgets came from his lack of a Nintendo Game Boy when he was a child . I vowed from that day on to get his hands on as many tech products as possible. My approach to a review is to make it informative for the technofile while still making it understandable to everyone. Ben is a new voice in the tech industry and is looking to make a mark wherever he goes. When not reviewing products, I is also a 911 Telecommunicator just outside of Pittsburgh PA.
