ATSC SALUTES BROADCASTERS AND CONSUMER TECHNOLOGY COMPANIES PUSHING FORWARD WITH NEXTGEN TV DEPLOYMENT

The Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) today congratulated consumer technology companies Hisense, LG Electronics, Samsung, and Sony for leading the effort to offer next-generation receivers to consumers, as the consumer television industry is poised to ship 4.5 million NEXTGEN TV products to retailers this year.

ATSC 3.0 is a suite of standards developed by ATSC members – the world’s first IP-based system that marries broadband and broadcast, ushering in the next-generation television era, which will offer better pictures and sound, interactive capabilities, advanced emergency information, and more.
“The news that another major manufacturer, Hisense, will be joining the prestigious list of companies offering consumers the option of next-generation TV reception is encouraging to broadcasters across the U.S. who already have or will soon upgrade to ATSC 3.0.  We look forward to the continuing growth of NEXTGEN TV service as markets emerge for new TV sets, standalone receivers, and other accessory antenna products,” said ATSC President Madeleine Noland.

The Consumer Technology Association this week said that overall 2021 sales of NEXTGEN TVs more than tripled last year’s original forecast, with three million units shipped by manufacturers.  CTA is projecting 2022 NEXTGEN TV sales of 4.5 million units, as the number of TV makers endorsing the hybrid over-the-air and over-the-top ATSC 3.0 technology continues to grow.

With the recent addition of next-generation TV broadcasting in Los Angeles and Washington, these new services now reach nearly half of all American viewers.  Stations in 46 U.S. markets are offering NEXTGEN TV services powered by ATSC 3.0, and more market-by-market service launches are planned throughout 2022.  Internationally, South Korea in its sixth year of ATSC 3.0 services, Jamaica is launching commercial services in 2022, and other countries from Brazil to India are actively exploring the ATSC 3.0 broadcasting standard.

CES Attendees Can Find ATSC 3.0 at CES

ATSC snips the ribbon on its “Full Steam Ahead” CES 2022 display in the Las Vegas Convention Center (GL-13) later today, with a comprehensive exhibit supported by ATSC members Pearl TV, Sinclair Broadcast Group, and Gaian Solutions.  Each member will showcase “NEXTGEN TV powered by ATSC 3.0” innovations and developments at the ATSC booth.

For those not attending CES or not able to visit the ATSC booth, the organization will mark the first day of CES with a special livestreamed event called “CES 2022: A Look Ahead from ATSC” scheduled for Wednesday, January 5, at 7:00PM Eastern.  The discussion and live chat will be streamed at www.ATSC.org.  ATSC President Noland will be joined at Wednesday’s livestreamed event by Chandra Kotaru, Founder and CEO of Gaian Solutions; Mark Aitken, Senior Vice President of Sinclair Broadcast Group and President of ONE Media 3.0, LLC; and Anne Schelle, Managing Director of the Pearl TV broadcaster business organization.

Noland will also participate in two CES Conferences events: “NEXTGEN TV – New Opportunities for Broadcast and Broadband” at 2:00 PM Pacific and the “Future of Televisions” at 3:00 PM Pacific on Thursday afternoon in LVCC North Hall N259.
