100,000 Reasons Why Austria’s Emergency Services Depend on Mission-Critical TETRA Communications

Motorola Solutions (NYSE: MSI) announced that more than 100,000 emergency service users have now registered to use Austria’s mission-critical, nationwide digital radio network.

Around 90 percent of all digital radio devices used on the public safety network are Motorola Solutions’ TETRA handhelds and in-car solutions which are certified by the Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI). Customers include Austria’s police forces, fire brigades and ambulance services, highlighting the long-standing trust in Motorola Solutions for reliable, resilient and secure communications.

“Reaching 100,000 users is a major milestone that reinforces the value and dependability that the TETRA radio standard provides for Austria’s emergency services every day,” said Albert Schauer, managing director, TETRON.

“In critical moments where every second counts, first responders know that their radio provides a lifeline, keeping them safe and connecting them to urgent support and back-up at the press of a button,” said Wolfgang Müller, head of department design and operations of critical communication infrastructures at the Austrian Ministry of the Interior.

From the bustling tourist hubs of Vienna and Salzburg to the mountainous alpine regions, Austria’s emergency services experience extremely high reliability with 99.96 percent availability for system users. The network comprises more than 1,600 sites and connects 24 control rooms across police, fire and ambulance agencies.

Time and again, the network has provided safe and proven performance for first responders when it matters most. During public demonstrations in Vienna in January 2022, the network supported more than 50,000 radio calls to help responding agencies keep citizens safe. In April this year, more than 11,000 radio calls were made during a major fire at an industrial plant in Upper Austria as fire agencies worked together to contain the blaze.

Austria’s TETRA network has been successfully implemented and operated by TETRON Digitalfunk, a subsidiary of Motorola Solutions, since 2004. The TETRA standard is trusted all over the world by emergency services that rely on mission-critical voice communications every day.
