AHN Sports Medicine Teams Up with the AthLife Foundation to Host Student-Athlete Leadership Day
Allegheny Health Network (AHN) Sports Medicine, part of the AHN Orthopaedic Institute, is the presenting sponsor of the AthLife Foundation Student Athlete Leadership Day for more than 100 local high school student-athletes. The invited students, will receive expert guidance on maintaining a healthy balance in their daily lives while managing the significant demands of athletics and academics. The event will take place at the AHN Montour Health + Sports Medicine Center on Thursday, April 13th from 8 a.m.-1 p.m.
Student Athlete development industry experts will present sessions at the event on leadership, athlete mental health and wellness, sports performance, and unlocking advocacy and social justice skills.
“AHN Sports Medicine & Performance has a long history of helping our region’s athletes to perform at the highest levels,” said Craig Castor, AHN Manager of Orthopedic Services overseeing Athletic Trainers. “We are extremely pleased to partner with the AthLife Foundation to provide our region’s young, college bound athletes with information and resources that will help prepare them for the unique experience and challenges ahead, and to support their overall health and wellbeing.”
Formed in 2010, the AthLife Foundation works with high schools from across the country – to help provide the right kind of sport experience for students through the creation and development of a critical mentoring position, called an Academic Athletic Coach. The organization is currently working to establish an academic athletic coach and advisor program at schools across Pennsylvania. A key strategic funding partnership with the CNX Foundation and Mentorship Academy, has allowed the platform to reach, Aliquippa Junior and Senior High School, Cornell Middle and High School, McKeesport High School, Northgate Junior and Senior High school, Obama Academy and Westinghouse Academy.
“Empowering high school student athletes to learn about their transferrable life and leadership skills is the key to having a positive impact on their teammates and peers. Thanks to Allegheny Health Network, we are able to provide this incredible opportunity and event to work with many of Western Pennsylvania’s high schools that are building strong programs for their kids.” said Jeff McCann, Executive Director of the AthLife Foundation.
Opened last November, the AHN Montour Health + Sports Medicine Center is one of the largest sports complexes of its kind in the country. The 20,000 square-foot-medical facility is connected to the Pittsburgh Riverhounds Soccer Club’s practice and training facility. The site also houses three outdoor fully turfed soccer fields with the construction of eight more underway. The medical center offers access to physical therapy, orthopedic specialists, a sports science lab, sports performance training, imaging, and primary care.
