Strategies for Keeping Your Camera Steady

A stable camera is essential for taking clear pictures and seamless videos. Nothing can ruin a great shot more than the camera shaking and wobbling. It instantly takes the viewer out of your video and draws attention to the camerawork—but holding a camera steady on your own can be tough. If you’re new to shooting pictures and video, instability can be problematic. Luckily, there’s plenty of simple things you can do to keep your camera from shaking. Here are some strategies for keeping your camera steady.

Use a Camera Stabilizer

The quickest and most straightforward solution is to use a stabilizer. It’s a device that will hold your camera perfectly still every single time. That way, you don’t have to worry about the stability of your camera, as it will be perfect every time. Some stabilizers work well for pictures and video; know exactly what to look for when you’re selecting one. It’s an extra purchase, but the money can be well worth it if you’re struggling with stability issues.

Take the Right Stance

There are a right way and a wrong way to hold your camera if you want to get a stable shot. Here’s what to do:

  • Don’t stand with your feet right next to each other. Instead, put your dominant foot in front and your other foot slightly behind.
  • Bend your knees slightly to give yourself a firmer footing.
  • If you walk during the shot, walk very slowly with bent knees.

Focus on Your Breathing

You probably aren’t thinking about your breathing when you’re shooting, but you should. Your breathing plays a significant role in your ability to hold a camera steady. If you’re nervous and you take quick, shallow breaths, you’ll have a hard time controlling your camera. You may even start shaking as a result.

Stand back, close your eyes, and take several long, deep breaths. Slowing your breathing will calm your nerves and help you focus. As a result, you’ll be able to hold your camera without shaking.

Use Your Camera Strap

Does your camera have a strap? If so, then you can use it as a stability device. Here’s how it works:

  • Tuck your elbows into your ribs and extend your forearms.
  • Keep extending until your camera strap catches and starts to pull.
  • Use the force from the strap to hold the camera stable for your shot.

These are a few top strategies for keeping your camera steady. You’ll be set up for success the next time you need that extra-stable shot.
