AHN offers the community a convenient way to properly dispose of unused medications on ‘National Drug Take Back Day’ on April 22nd and Year-Round
Allegheny Health Network (AHN) is reminding residents of Western Pennsylvania about the importance of properly disposing surplus and/or expired medications, through recognizing ‘National Drug Take Back Day’ on April 22nd. AHN offers permanent, secure boxes at seven AHN locations enabling patients and visitors to dispose of unused prescription medications quickly and easily.
According to Senator Bob Casey, 20 million Americans have opioid use disorder and 115 people per day are dying from it. 5,120 Pennsylvanians experienced fatal overdoses from November 2021 to October 2022. Drug take back programs encourage the public to remove unneeded medications from their homes as a measure of preventing medication misuse and opioid addiction.

The permanent, secure boxes at seven AHN locations enable patients and visitors to quickly and easily dispose of unused prescription medications. Accepted at the take-back boxes are unused or expired prescription medication (including Schedule II-V controlled substances), unused or expired over-the-counter medications and pet medication. Not accepted are Schedule I controlled substances, illegal drugs, thermometers, aerosol cans, inhalers, needles, lotions/liquids or hydrogen peroxide.
